Daily Design Practice + Can Designs
I first heard about Daily Design Practices through Olivia Herrick. I am unsure where the concept originated, though perhaps through the AIGA. it’s revolutionized my work and how much content I can produce in a short amount of time.
What’s a Daily Design Practice (DDP) you may ask? Each work day before I start on any client work on my plate, I warm up by creating something for myself, following my own curiosities. Often this is what I will post to my Instagram account.
Though DDP I’ve learned to quickly generate ideas and often times the discoveries that I make during this time end up being infused into the brands I work with, saving me time and frustration.
While I believe anyone — writer, painter, musician — can start their own daily design practice, here a few prompts for graphic designers specifically:
Dream restaurant branding
Pattern
Icons from around your home
A custom letter form
A product mock-up via an image from somewhere like Yellow Images
If you’re a creative, I hope that you’ll give the discipline of a Daily Design (or Creative) Practice a whirl. Here are a couple of can designs — one for a kombucha brand, the other for a coffee co. — I did over a couple of mornings during my DDP. If you have questions about starting a Daily Design Practice, comment below. I would love to hear how a DDP has improved your workflow and nurtured your creativity.
